CN's Distributed Braking Container

I've read that the air line leaks worse in cold weather. Now I've learned that the leakage can be bad enough that they have to boost the locomotive's air compressor supply for the air brakes.

B&O's Colored Positional Lights

Because any remaining old style signals are going to soon be replaced to implement Positive Train Control, some railfans are taking pictures of the signals instead of trains. B&O and Pennsy were the two railroads that had their own unique design of signal heads. I have already covered Pennsy's yellow light positional design . This is looking south along the former B&O branch line (Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton) in Deshler, OH . The tracks just on the other side of the depot is the former B&O mainline to Chicago. Lost/Aban/C&NW/Minneapolis & St. Louis Bridge/Iowa Central over Mississippi River at Keithsburg, IL

( Bridge Hunter , no Historic Bridges,  John A Weeks III , John Marvig ,  3D Satellite ) This route was still the Minneapolis & St. Louis railroad on the 1928 RR Atlas, thus the label rrMisc instead of rrCaNW. C&NW bought the M&StL in 1960. Bridge built 1909; Abandoned 1971; Partially lost to fire in 1981. "The vertical lift section was locked in the up /open position until the lift portion was accidentally destroyed by fireworks and the ensuing fire on June 29, 1981. The 220 ft lift section fell into the river blocking river traffic on the main channel of the Mississippi River for more than a week until it was removed by the US Army Corps of Engineers." Train Wrecks and some Safety Rules

I don't normally discuss train wrecks other than tank car safety implications. But I read about three wrecks in one evening. That exceeds my rule of writing about a topic if I see it mentioned a couple of times within a couple of days. And an important part of the history of railroading is the improvement of safety. The Janney (knuckle) coupler and air brakes are examples of equipment the railroads were required to convert to in the 19th century because they improved safety. Using roller bearings instead of friction bearings is an example of a rule that went into affect during the 20th Century to improve safety. (Roller bearings also reduced a lot of labor requirements. And, unlike coupler and air brake changes, not all cars had to change at the same time to be compatible. So the railroads converted most of their cars without a rule.
